Coffee and a Kiss

“ur coffee is getting cold!!!”

Don’t go mad or panic or you haven’t skipped a page or paragraph. I don’t love to start like this, but this is how my mornings start. May be you are new to my wife’s invitation for coffee. Apparently, my mind was occupied by the last meeting with my editor. He promised that he would kick me out, if I couldn’t bring him an article for the next issue. Last article on chaos theory went to the bins, “We want people to read this, and do you think they will at least glance this?” So it’s like, I m on the verge of preparing my CV for the next job and article at the same time. In a quest for an evocative idea my ears didn’t pick Renuka’s voice. The voice which took control over me, as my better half, it’s no wonder why everyone calls me uxorious.

I wonder what would have happened, if she wasn’t in my life. Oh God!!! I totally forgot her coffee, which sits in the table enjoying the cool breeze in my balcony. Now you know why she was screaming …. Actually shouting… oh no… speaking in her shrill tone. I beamed my stupid smile when I saw her standing in front of me, supporting herself to the wall, with her elbows bent to her hip.

“This is what you do daily, do you want someone to remind you of your coffee? “

“Sorry Renu!!! My mind was occupied with the article”

“hmmmm!! That sounds a better excuse! Shall I get you another one?”

“Oh no!! This is fine! This can keep my brain working for the next 2 hours”

“Phew!!! Too much coffee, isn’t good for you!”

“Caffeine is actually good; it keeps me away from Alzheimer’s and heart problems”

“Don’t tell me your next article is on caffeine? I don’t mind tearing it now, before your editor does!!!”

I took my cup and joined her while managing a half smile. “Hey every time I see your face, there’s something unique, like a newly bloomed flower”

She eyed me naughtily biting her lower lip, “Stop that!”

I was holding her arms and toying with her ring, while my eyes were busy trying to lock a stare with her, ”You know that I m not lying, you are full of ideas, when I go blank, you are my source code”

She was smiling with her lip still tugged by her incisors, which made me wonder, is she the most beautiful thing in this world? Or am I under a spell by this woman?

“Idiot!! Did u get ur mind onto something, which could be useful for the next issue?”

“I m already onto something beautiful, ur face. The way you tuck the single strand of hair behind your ears, actually I m admire that, perhaps my character for the next story would be like you”

She pulled me close with her arms embracing my waist, “You know something; the caffeine is doing all gimmicks in your brain”

“hahaha!! Now you talk science!! I thought you were my recipe for my brain!!”

Her arms brushed my shoulder in the name of a pat, “Listen man!! Caffeine is an impostor. It kicks ur brain to pump dopamine, which are responsible for your elevated moods”

“Now I see the point made by my mom in picking a pretty biochemist in my life”

“Picking??? I m not a gunny bag to be picked”

I know I pissed her, by my wrong selection of words, “Hey I didn’t mean that, it’s like, she couldn’t ve made a better selection”

“Bloody hell !!! selection?? This is ridiculous!!!”

“You can’t complain for everything Renu! Damn!!!”

There was a moment of silence hanging in the form of thin air between us, trying to widen the gap. With every second passing by, pride and ego took the upper hand, stopping us from breaking the ice. The self love feeling pushed us towards the corners of our living room. This time it’s not me, who is going to ameliorate her morose mood. Now there’s a soft mumble,

“Idiot!!!”

“What? Are you talking to me?”

“Of course!!! Which idiot is living in this house?”

I can’t stop myself from laughing at her intended sarcasm, “I thought the only trait we both shared was the stupidity”

“I could see you something mischievous in your face; did you finally get the idea for your next article?”

Women could easily picture what’s in our minds, ironically the vice versa is next to impossible. “Sort of!!!” I started to roll my tongue inside my mouth, signaling that I was through with it.

“Yipee!!! What‘s this about? Coffee? Romance? Or a mockery about girls?

“hahaha!!! I like the order in which u say, it has a tinge of everything to it!”

“Give me a hint at least! Don’t say it’s still in shrouds!”

“Yup! I can’t reveal this time, not like the last occasion”

Before I could reply, her wet lips made a gentle buss on me, but this time it was on my cheek.

“Do you still want to hold back ur title???”

Now it was my turn to part my lips, to say
  “COFFEE AND A KISS”

cHIt ChaT- SwEthA n PherOmoNes !!!

Sidharth : hey punk ! How is it going?

Vikram: Ya! Doing good mate!

Sidharth: Is something eating you? You don’t look good!

Vikram: Nah! I was wondering about the fragrance I felt, when that gal crossed me.  Doesn’t ring a bell, dude!

Sidharth: Phew ! I don t even remember the name of my body spray!

Vikram: Not a big deal man!  It all boils down to pheromones! A chemical that is secreted in our body, which triggers the opposite sex!

Sidharth: Stop this bullshit!

Vikram: This isn’t bullshit. Each one has a distinct pheromone (smell) which is secreted by our body.

Sidharth: Agreed! But when I hugged Swetha, I felt only her Blue lady fragrance.

Vikram: Shit man! When did this happen?

Sidharth: Explain the former, so that you can comment on the latter!!!

Vikram: Okie! This is how it goes. Due to evolution, most women have lost the ability to secrete such natural pheromones. That’s why we have these perfumes in the market.

Sidharth: Oh! But the rest still have it in them. Right?

Vikram: Ya they do ! On the other hand, you were so dumb to recognize it in Swetha J J
Sidharth : This could be the perfect reason, I guess !

Vikram: hehehe !!! When we enjoy things, we never question about it, perhaps our cognizance vanishes (boom!!!)

Sidharth: Just how, I felt when I watched ‘Life of PI’

Vikram: WTF!! Didn’t we plan it today night?

Sidharth: Dude, I promised to take her out, so I had to machi.. L L sorry da..

Vikram: This is ridiculous man! That reminds me the other thing, the hug!!! When was that?

Sidharth: Last week, I dropped her in her home. She asked me to join her for a cup of coffee.

Vikram: So you joined her, for a hug too!

Sidharth: ya ! (With a big smile) She started it, what am I to do?

Vikram: I know about you! You are a schmuck!!! Your boss always talks about pro activeness, this is a perfect example.

Sidharth: Stop pulling my legs! Probably I gotta be pro active too!

Vikram: There are two things. First, girls love guys like you, so don’t change.

Sidharth: Next?

Vikram: Pro activeness, OMG !! sathiyama adu unaku varadhu.. hehehe !!!!

Sidharth: Screw u, asshole!!

Vikram: Dude, u gotta wrap things pretty soon. It s time to break the ice.

Sidharth: What do u mean by that??Me getting married??

Vikram: ya man! Talk to her folks!

Sidharth: U know something, when I last met her dad, he gave me a lecture on how to dress. He really pisses me, man!!

Vikram: lol J

Sidharth: Don laugh. He hates my goatee beard and expects me to solve Hindu-Crossword puzzles. Shit !

Vikram: Probably he should have seen your leave lettersJ J

Sidharth: Nejama da… u remember, how I filed a report with the word ‘borrow’ instead of ‘lent’

Vikram:  ya..  Your boss threw the file at your face, right?

Sidharth: Not exactly, but something close to that...

Vikram: So what now? Gonna solve crossword???

Sidharth: poda dai.. What shal I do ?? Help me out da L L

Vikram: Gottit man !!! Its Pink Sugar !!

Sidharth: What??

Vikram: The perfume of the gal, who crossed me J J

Sidharth : Phew !! Don’t you give a damn what’s happening here??? M moving out...

Vikram: Convey my regards to your in laws dude!!!

( Sidharth balled his fists leaving alone his middle finger to point at me !! )

Chit Chat

Vikram: Hey Buddy! You sound dull, what happened??

Sidharth: My girl friend kissed goodbye!!!

Vikram: Really! Now you both started kissing ah?? Woowww !!! Treat???

Sidharth: Dai .. yen da..

Vikram: Machi !!! Just kidding da. What happened?

Sidharth: I never laughed when Swetha cracked a joke
.
Vikram: Was it really a joke??

Sidharth: That’s the problem, man. I heard the joke umpteen number of times; probably I should have laughed at the joke, not for the joke!!!

Vikram: Hmmm.. The thing is the neurons in your brain have started firing.

Sidharth: Don’t sound like Mr.Rangaswamy, our Biology teacher.

Vikram: He is a legend dude. I miss his lectures. When your neurons start firing sequentially (sending electric signals), you will not laugh or else you will appreciate the humor.

Sidharth: So, the brain doesn’t recognize humor. Right?

Vikram: yup. That’s why Santhanam and vadivelu doesn’t work after some time. While laughing, the neurons never fire, it’s a complex process, but

Sidharth: podum.. Iduku Swetha joke parvala...

Vikram: Cool da.. What did you do?

Sidharth: I should never have fallen in love with Swetha.

Vikram: hehehehe… I missed the count on your love affairs da. 3 or 4 ?

Sidharth: C’mmon man! Stop the crap. I’m damn serious about my love. You never understand what love is?

Vikram: oh! True love? There‘s nothing called true love, it’s just a hormonal rush.

Sidharth: Stop your testosterone and estrogen stories da. I m already fed up.

Vikram:  It’s a bloody truth. Every time a gal passes me, adrenalin pumps in.

Sidharth: You are a pervert! You sound like a stray dog, looking for a mate.

Vikram: Average man thinks about sex 19 times in a day, in that context, I m happy to be a pervert. To answer your second part, man is a social animal.

Sidharth: I had enough for the day; let’s not make it a big deal. I need a break now.

Vikram: Did we have an argument? How about a beer tonight, I’ll host it.

Sidharth: No da… I gave up drinking.

Vikram: what the fuck!! Last week you had a beer with us, why shifting gears to spirituality???

Sidharth: nee vera. I promised Swetha, that I would abstain from drinking.

Vikram: did she ask you to refrain from drinking or our hangout?

Sidharth: C’mmon da! Swetha is not that type. She cares me a lot and is over possessive.

Vikram: Machi! Great da! You are at good at romance; better write a love story, you can earn millions.

Sidharth: Stop kidding! I m neither good in scientific facts nor at writing stories. Probably you could try.

Vikram: lol.. Toilet papers will be better than my articles.

Sidharth: hahahaha..

Vikram: I recently read a one liner, wanna hear? “My husband claims to be a great sexual athlete, just because he always comes first” share this with Swetha, I meant the joke.

Sidharth: gotta do that. I’ve to get a gift for her birthday.

Vikram: Awesome dude. Don’t ask my advice.

Sidharth: Please man, help me. Be serious, I m don’t suggest me tales on 21 mating positions

Vikram: She might like that too. Anyway, there is a famous quote,

Sidharth: (sighs !!) what now, another sarcasm on women?

Vikram: I m spilling the facts da. Nevertheless, “Women will remember the first kiss after men have forgotten the last”

Sidharth: So what?? Wait.. wait.. woowww.. great man…  great..
Vikram: Don’t forget the beer da.

Sidharth: Holy Shit! I m leaving now.

Vikram: Don’t tell me it’s Swetha, asking you to come now.

Sidharth: Yup its her.Sorry da.. Catch you later. Bye.

Vikram: I’ll be here, next week to hear your confessions. Have fun buddy.

Culinary Delights

The showers were coming down heavily, once I parked my vehicle opposite to the grocery store. I knew that I would be soaked, before making it to my home. It’s going to be pouring all day, cats and dogs, perhaps. Before fulfilling my mom’s wish, I thought it was wise to treat my taste buds. With quick strides I made to the pani puri stall, to my surprise, I was the first customer. Gupta Chat is a hangout for most of the teens in my area. It welcomes you with puri’s stacked in big packs. A big tava, experiencing the first heat from the stove, amidst the chill weather outside.

The chef (owner  ... or entrepreneur) has an eye for detail and adroitness. He decorates the tava with cutlet around the periphery. The cutlet looks pale yellow in its edges and dark brown in its surfaces which will make you go begging. I bet, you’ll try once you catch a glimpse of these little yellow punks. He greets us with a traditional smile, (vaanga sir) but he is a cult north Indian, tracing back to suburbs of Delhi. Making a quick glance at the menu, I decided to settle down for a aloo chat, which I haven’t tried.

With his razor sharp knife he chopped the onions, thanks to his rich experience. Now he carefully placed chopped potatoes (boiled earlier) in the tava. He dropped a tea spoon of butter to the aloos. Melting butter and aloos, were making my mouth water, soon the aloos turned golden brown in patches.  He placed the fried aloos in a Styrofoam cup (to avoid our palms getting burned... common sense) Chopped onions and bits of coriander soon decorated my chat.

I was waiting anxiously for him to complete his decoration and serve my aloos. He made a blend of spicy and sweet water to the aloos, with a final touch of lemon to mitigate the hotness!!  Finally he served the aloo chat after 15 minutes of agonizing wait. Once I had the first spoon of aloos, I know it was worth the wait. Aloos cooked perfectly and crispy edges made my day. A beautiful texture was evident due to the butter, adding to this was the spicy water (pani).

The place was buzzing with teens from schools and colleges, making their presence by gossips and naughty smiles. The gulab jamuns packed in glass jars was making a mockery at my resistance. The scent of moist earth after first showers and now jamuns swimming in trickle. Felt heaven was bit near to me at the first bite of the jamun. This is how ambrosia would have tasted, perhaps most worldly pleasures are brief, by now my mom texted me.

wru?????

OOPS!! Time to move out. Thank you Mr.Gupta and to your culinary delights.

PS: Dedicated to foodie Aranya (Forest), who has taken eating as her hobby.

Confessions of a Technocrat

Confessions of a Technocrat

Most parents want their kids to be in the most prestigious institutions of the country like IIT’s. It s no wonder they visualize their kids to be future Kalam wearing white coats sitting before Hi Tech equipments.  The three letter mantra ‘P..S..G’ was all I heard at the final days of my school life. “It was all study and no play” syndrome taking a toll on my adolescence. Running behind tuition centers, who were good at beating around the bush and the students; burning the midnight oil for the same problem that has been repeating for the last six years. In this modus operandi, like me, many fortunate was able to kiss the finishing line. Brainy from all schools, computer wizards, guys and gals with three digits IQ all under one roof- PSG Tech
An overwhelming feeling starts to creep in when someone asks ‘Which college r u???’  Many of my school friends stopped talking to me when they learnt that I m in PSG Tech. That’s how it starts, just like the caption “Owner’s pride neighbor’s envy”

Chapter 1

" All roads lead to F Block Canteen"

Monday mornings are the ones which many of us loathe, but still there s a sense of déjà vu. The students buzzing the campus with drooping eyelids and a touch of heavy makeup; every now and then, a student cursing about the assignment’s deadline that is due for more than a week.  I don t believe in adages but certainly the new unwritten rule has made me think about it. “All roads lead to Canteen “Place for you to refresh your adolescence and your taste buds to some extent.
One can t expect brewing filter coffee or aroma of pan cakes, but hopefully a lousy tea with lame puffs. Every part of your life teaches you something, I learnt the art of getting a tea token with 100 pairs of hands along with mine. Skill of dividing a cream cake among six or seven is often a scene that you won’t miss, with every one licking their fingers soberly looking at the spilled cake on the table.
We have the best hot water served under the tag 'TEA'. Every sip of it tells you that there are more hardships in our life than this. Lot of activities go around here, retinas doing scans that fail during studies.
